Languages and Cultures College

Andrew Pascual, Languages & Cultures College

Are you interested in how different cultures can communicate with each other?  Do you want to know more about how language shapes our perceptions of the world?  Well, this new residential college has at its core a variety of courses that introduce students to the cultures of non-English speaking countries and also to the phenomenon of cross-cultural communication. Through discussion of topics such as daily life, the arts, society, politics, religion, pop culture and commerce, you will develop a greater appreciation for the differences and commonalities that make up our world.

To join the Languages & Cultures College, sign up for one of two Foundation seminars:  “How we do things with Words”, offered by Prof. Katherine Faull, humanities or “Family Ties/Family Chains: The Russian Experiment”, offered by Prof. Ludmila Shleyfer Lavine, Russian.  By doing so, you will automatically become a member of the College.

Members of the Languages and Cultures Residential College live together in the newest residence halls, go to common hours together, and participate in community activities -- such as field trips to New York and Washington D.C.  The common hours enhance your introduction to other cultures. For example, topics for exploration (with hands-on opportunities!!!) during Common Hours include food, sports, family, the media, commerce, environmental issues, immigration, the arts, film, performance, music, religion, politics and many others.

Living together and developing friendships and intellectual relationships with peers, often in discussions that spill over into social time together, provide a special opportunity to make the most of the liberal arts university experience that Bucknell provides.

If you have already studied a language at high school, then you might also want to continue with that language or branch out and start a new one!  Bucknell offers students the opportunity to learn 10 languages—Russian, German, Arabic, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Latin and Ancient Greek.
