Volume 141, Number 9 Chelsea Clinton visits the University to discuss mother’s politicsBy Bethany Lavins Staff Writer
Chelsea Clinton, daughter of presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y), yesterday lent support to her mother’s campaign, answering questions about the senator’s stance on policy issues and vision for change in America. By noon, the Weis Center lobby was packed with students and members of the University community, as well as many people from the surrounding towns. Sarah Smith drove down from Watsontown “just to hear what she [Chelsea Clinton] had to say.” Many students were encouraged that the University was attracting more political attention. “I’m happy that Bucknell is bringing more candidates representatives,” Amelia Minnich ’11 said. Kim Reynolds ’09, president of College Democrats, which sponsored the event, opened the talk by introducing Chelsea Clinton and her accomplishments. After taking the stage, the former first daughter said her goal was to help the audience make a more informed assessment of her mother’s campaign. “I am a passionate supporter of my mom,” she said. “And not only because she is my mom.” She encouraged students to go to www.HillaryClinton.com, as well as the Web sites of the other candidates, and to listen to the upcoming debates to make a more circumspect appraisal of their views. After urging the audience to “please call me Chelsea,” she began taking questions from the crowd. Queries on Hillary Clinton’s campaign covered issues of support for Americans with disabilities, health care and jobs and the country’s current financial crisis. (read full article)
