A specialist in the area of Indonesian culture, her interests include the representation of "Chineseness" in contemporary Balinese performance and intersections of Balinese performance, ritual and politics. An active researcher, performer and proponent of gamelan music, she is recipient of several international research grants, including Fulbright-Hays and FLAS fellowships.

Dr. Bethany Collier performs gamelan with the New York-based gamelan ensemble Dharma Swara in Indonesia

Dharma Swara, the Balinese gamelan ensemble based out of the Indonesian consulate in New York City, was the only American group invited to compete in Bali's international competition this past summer. Dr. Bethany Collier performs with the ensemble and directs the Bucknell gamelan ensemble.
