In 1998 Bucknell’s power plant was converted from a conventional coal-burning facility to a co-generation power plant fueled by natural gas. The co-gen facility captures and reuses waste heat for an overall efficiency is 75-80%, which is exceptionally high compared to conventional power plants. The co-gen power plant has also led to a 40% reduction in the university’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Beginning in 2000, Bucknell began purchasing wind power to supplement its on site power generation. As of January 2008, wind power represents 100% of Bucknell’s purchased energy, for a total of approximately 4 million kilowatt hours per year.
