LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University will present Cherish the Ladies' "Celtic Christmas" on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25.
Cherish the Ladies began as a concert series featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music.
Named for an Irish jig, the group has won recognition as the first all-female Irish band and been lauded worldwide for its unique blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step-dancing.
Irish melodies and traditional carols
Traditional Irish melodies and carols like "The Holly and the Berry" and "The Wexford Carol" are interspersed with well-known Christmas carols including "O Come All Ye Faithful," "What Child Is This," "The Little Drummer Boy," "We Three Kings," "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Silent Night" and "The First Noel."
All of the arrangements in this holiday show are made newly fresh by the use of the group's unique Celtic instrumentation (penny whistles, fiddles, accordion, concertina, piano, guitar, mandolin, banjo, flutes) and beautiful harmonies, and then heightened by the inclusion of world-class Irish step-dancing.
Cherish the Ladies has shared the stage with James Taylor, Joan Baez, Emmy Lou Harris, and the Chieftains. The Celtic Album, a collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony, led to a 1999 Grammy nomination.
The group has recorded 10 acclaimed albums and appeared in the United States on "CBS This Morning," "Good Morning America," "Evening at Pops," C-SPAN, PBS and National Public Radio.
