LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Luna Negra Dance Theater will give a performance on Friday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets for this performance are $20.
Devoted to the creation and presentation of contemporary dance by Latino choreographers, the Luna Negra Dance Theater combines ballet and modern dance techniques strongly flavored by Latino and Afro-Caribbean dance forms and styles.
"It is a delightful and involving blend of contrasts, serious and funny, passionate and serene, adventurous and subtle," said Bill Boswell, executive director of Bucknell's Weis Center.
“The first work of the four on the program is to the music of, and is kind of a celebration of, Xavier Cugat who was responsible for mainstreaming Latin music into the American popular consciousness during a long period from the late 1920s on into the 50s.
"One piece is set to the only truly unique form of Portuguese folk and popular music, 'Fado.' Another work is haunting and beautiful, and the program closes to a stunning piece celebrating the exuberant energy of Brazil's annual Carnival," Boswell said.
"Luna Negra has received wide critical acclaim for its remarkable collaborations with artists of other disciplines including world-renowned, Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca and Grammy Award nominee Angel Melendez and the 911 Mambo Orchestra," he added.
The dance company, which has performed across the United States, in Mexico and Panama, conducts extensive outreach and education programs. The troupe will work with Bucknell students during the days before the performance.
