Topics: Christenberry's work from the artist's perspective, and the curator's perspective

Since 1959 William Christenberry has, through his art practice, attempted to “possess” the Southern landscape and culture that has formed his identity. A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., he has returned to Hale and Perry counties consistently for more than 40 years to document changes and refresh his inspiration. In this pursuit to fix his memory of place, Christenberry has developed a visual language that encompasses drawing, painting, prints, photographs, sculpture and installation, all of which are represented in this exhibition. This exhibition focuses on works on paper by two Tianjin-based contemporary artists, Chen Pu and Jiang Lu. Both Jiang and Chen make work that embodies ideas of journey. Chen makes silkscreen prints and Jiang creates ink and wash paintings. Read more

Topics: the artist's work and related issues

This exhibition features one significant, large-scale painting each by six acclaimed painters. The artists address many important issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, including issues of race, war, the environment, misuse of power, human conflict, and sexuality. In a variety of ways, each combines an acute knowledge of painting, freely referencing painting genres including portraiture, history painting, landscape and allegory. Quoting historic painting passages and incorporating art historic subjects or styles into their own distinctive work, the artists make powerful, smart and challenging paintings. Read more
