Historic Works Collection

Most impressive are the 24 historic artworks from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, which include the earliest documented painting by Pontormo, Cupid and Apollo, a very early Rosso Fiorentino, Madonna and Child, and works by Tintoretto, Veronese, Francesco Cossa, Agostino Tassi, Giampietrimo, and Andrea Sansovino.

Paintings by other historic artists include work by Eugene Boudin, Anthony van Dyck, George Inness, Clarence Johns, John Frederick Kensett, Johan Jongkind, Maurice Prendergast, among others.

Diverse and eclectic historic prints begin with a late 15th century Albrecht Durer. Other highlights include works by Jacque Callot, Honore Daumier, Albrecht Durer, Francisco Francisco Goya, William Hogarth, Hans Holbein the younger, Lucas Van Leyden, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Marcantonio Raimondi, Rembrandt van Rijn, James McNeil Whistler, and Hieronymous Wix.

The Gifford Collection of James Gillray (1756 - 1815) caricatures is a large group of fine prints from this renowned English caricaturist. As a master of political satire, Gillray caricatured figures including Napolean (Boney), King George III, and also on social satire.
