Collection Focus II: Transformed Spaces/Invented Narratives

Transformed Spaces/Invented Narratives focuses on important and emerging contemporary artists working in photographic media who transform and create spaces, and invent narratives ranging from mysterious to the mundane. All works in this exhibition are recent additions to the permanent collection. The artists include Julie Becker (Los Angeles), James Casebere (New York), Leonidas Correa (Costa Rica), Gregory Crewdson (New York), and Abelardo Morell (Boston). This is Bayar’s curatorial debut.

Photography is an area of strength in the permanent collection. Numbering nearly 1000 objects, photographs are almost 20% of Samek holdings. This part of the collection is primarily the result of gifts. These photographs are in the collection as a result of several generous Samek patrons, for whom we are most grateful: Raymond Merritt, Raymond W. Merritt, and Sandra and Gary Sojka. In addition to giving fine works of art to the permanent collection, each has given duplicate photographs and other art in order to strengthen the collection through trade or sale.
