Library and Information Technology Goals
FY 2008-2009 and 2009-2010
Goal 1: Restructure the Library and Information Technology organization to provide leadership to the campus.
- Objective: Library and Information Technology serves the mission of the University by understanding the unique needs that exist throughout the Bucknell community. Restructuring the current flat organization will allow us to lead the campus in offering the services that enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship activities, and that support operational decision-making, accountability, strategic planning, and analysis.
- Objective: Complete the reorganization of User Services. Finalize organizational structure by 5-1-09 with plan for implementation for Summer 2009. Continually assess effectiveness.
Goal 2: Actively engage with faculty and students to understand and meet their teaching and learning needs in order to align Library and Information Technology initiatives with Institutional and departmental goals.
- Objective: Create new, richer channels for interactions with faculty and students.(This looks more like a means rather than an end, particularly when you look at the initiatives listed underneath.)
- Objective: Facilitate lifelong learning through active involvement in the curriculum and by teaching the skills necessary to enhance the development of information literacy and technological competency across disciplines.
- Objective: Demonstrate the value of innovative and transformative technologies to further research, teaching and learning.
- Objective: Proactively help faculty and students understand the rapidly changing nature of scholarly communication.
- Objective: Tailor services and service delivery based on the working styles and needs of our users in order to meet the academic mission of the university.
- Objective: Work with faculty and campus groups to support compliance with Middle States accreditation standards and recommendations regarding information and technology fluency across the curriculum.
- Objective: Coordinate communication with faculty as appropriate.
- Objective: Expand training offerings.
- Objective: Enhance digital video services and support.
- Objective: Overhaul lab/classroom hardware replacement process.
Goal 3: Provide integrated online services.
- Objective: Implement a comprehensive campus portal, integrating both academic and administrative functions.
- Objective: Implement an online collaboration tool for faculty.
- Objective: Use innovative technologies to aid discovery and to provide access to information quickly, seamlessly and according to users’ preferences.
Goal 4: Serve the administrative units of the campus community by providing opportunities to increase efficiency and productivity and accessing information.
- Objective: Effectively manage Bucknell University’s records and information.
- Objective: Implementing a data warehouse allows us to overcome these inefficiencies and related problems and capitalize upon the value of a data warehouse in informing decision-making throughout the University on a real-time basis. The range of benefits from a data warehouse include the following:
- Improved capacity to monitor key performance measures, find data trends and exceptions, and make sound data-driven decisions.
- Common data store integrated across multiple units that allows for daily operational reports and dynamic inquiries.
- Point-in-time and historical data snapshots via high-speed access for dynamic analysis, such as of admissions patterns, giving patterns, or budget trends.
- Comprehensive integration with Banner data.
- Consistent reporting definitions and reports across multiple dimensions of the University.
- Objective: Implementing a document imaging solution will assist in creating work flow efficiencies in all the administrative offices. Some of the benefits of document imaging are:
- Improved flow of information and documents as an integrated solution with Banner.
- Anytime, anywhere access to documents. This access has becoming increasingly important for our staff who work remotely and who need access to documents residing in offices on campus.
- A strengthened Records Retention program.
- Work flow efficiencies through retrieval of documents stored in various paper formats on campus with a single click of a mouse.
- Seamless sharing of documents across offices.
- Enhanced responsiveness to both internal and external constituents
Goal 5: Identify, measure, manage, and mitigate security risks to the University’s information and systems.
- Objective: Ensure the confidentiality of University information access and systems in a manner that is authorized and secure.
- Objective: Ensure the confidentiality of University information assets and systems in a manner that is authorized and secure.
- Objective: Develop and implement policies when necessary to protect University information.
Goal 6: Reduce the academic and business impact from system and network outages after a disaster.
- Objective: Evaluate and implement a disaster recovery and business continuity plan (present to University Management Group spring 2009)
Goal 7: Further develop the Bertrand Library as the intellectual center of Bucknell University.
- Objective: Engage the campus community in the Library expansion project (if approved by the Board of Trustees).
- Objective: Assess constituents’ expectations and needs for services, resources and learning. Consider this information and data in service planning and decision-making.
- Objective: Promote awareness of library resources and services. Target appropriate individuals, departments and offices.
- Objective: Support scholarly research by providing access to a rich collection of digital and print resources.
- Objective: Develop a plan for increasing the Library physical collections to 1.2 million volumes.
- Objective: Transform 2nd floor space to accommodate student and faculty needs and materials.
- Objective: Support scholarly research by facilitating access to the widest possible array of information and technology resources.
- Objective: Acquire, manage and reserve the knowledge and information needed to support a premier undergraduate institution.
- Objective: Build collections based on the changing curriculum and the teaching methods used by faculty.
- Objective: Develop ways and means of capturing and highlighting the scholarly output of the university.
- Objective: Provide users with services and a physical environment in the Bertrand Library tat is efficient nd conducive to research and learning.
Goal 8: Promote Library and Information Technology staff as experts in their field on campus and within their professional communities.
- Objective: Provide the tools and support for staff to excel within the context of the above goals.
- Objective: Align staff and work groups/teams with organizational goals that build on existing success and strengths.
