Three years after the founding of the institution in 1846, trustees approved a resolution calling for a committee "to report the form and devise of a seal for the University at Lewisburg." On April 17, 1849, the seal was approved. The seal shows the sun, an open book, and waves, symbolizing the light of knowledge and education surmounting the storms of life.
