5 Malcolm Street, affectionately known as the "Poet's Cottage," is a Bucknell-owned house that is used by the Stadler Center to house its visiting writers. Just off campus and not quite a five-minute walk from the Stadler Center, the cottage contains two independent apartments. The Philip Roth Resident in Creative Writing occupies the downstairs apartment, and the Stadler Fellow occupies the upstairs apartment.

 

The First Floor: Home to the Writer-in-Residence

The first floor apartment is occupied by the Philip Roth Resident each semester. The apartment contains two bedrooms, each with a queen bed; one bathroom; living room; dining room; kitchen with breakfast nook; and unfinished basement with washer and dryer and extra storage space. The extra bedroom comes in handy for visiting family or other guests. Each bedroom contains a large dresser and walk-in closet, and one contains a writing desk. The living room has two upholstered sofas, large bookshelf, small writing desk, television with DVD and VCR, and other assorted furniture. The dining room has a table and chairs and hutch. The kitchen is complete with full-sized range, full-sized refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, drip coffee-maker, essential pots and pans, utensils, dishes, and silverware. Attached to the kitchen is a sunny breakfast nook with table and two chairs. The apartment has centrai air and oil heat, both controlled by a central panel.

The Second Floor: Home to the Stadler Fellow

The second floor is a fully furnished and surprisingly roomy one-bedroom apartment. the long bedroom has a full-sized wooden sleigh bed, a large writer's desk, a large dresser with mirror and walk-in closet. Next door is the comfortable bathroom, which has a stall shower (no bathtub) and plenty of storage space. The kitchen has a full-sized stove, refrigerator and microwave, drip coffee-maker, essential pots and pans, utensils, dishes, silverware. new wooden cabinets, and large table and chairs. The living room comes complete with large couch and chair, TV with DVD and VCR, entertainment and book shelf, and more storage. Though the upstairs apartment does not have central air, there is a window unit A/C in the bedroom. Heat is controlled by a thermostat.
