UPDATE: The Best Places to Work program has ranked Bucknell University the 22nd best employer in Pennsylvania. In the rankings, which were revealed at an award ceremony this month in Hershey, Pa., only one other nonprofit institution scored higher than Bucknell.
"That we ranked so high in our first time participating in this program is a credit to the entire University community," Bucknell President Brian C. Mitchell said. "This affirmation from two outside organizations is a compliment to the University and the hard work undertaken every day across this campus to create a strong Bucknell."
LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University has been named one of the "Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania" for 2009 by a consortium of business and economic development organizations that includes the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Bucknell is listed among the state's top 50 large employers (with 250 or more employees) in the ranking that will be released in December. The ranking is based in large part on a random survey of employees at each institution that probes an extensive range of issues related to workplace satisfaction, including institutional and departmental leadership, planning, culture and communication; as well as role satisfaction, work environment, compensation and benefits, and relationship with supervisors.
This is the first year that the University has participated in the Best Places to Work in PA survey, which was created in 2000 as one of the first statewide programs of its kind in the country.
The survey and awards program identifies and honors the best places to be employed in Pennsylvania. The program is a public/private partnership between Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and the Central Penn Business Journal.
Many nonprofit and for-profit organizations from across the state entered this year's two-part process to determine the 100 Best Places to Work in PA. The first part evaluated each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics. This was worth about 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part surveyed employees, and the results counted for about 75 percent of the evaluation. The combined scores determined the final ranking. Best Companies Group manages the registration and survey process. About 51 percent of the 350 Bucknell employees selected in a random sample completed the online survey this past summer.
Bucknell will be recognized at the Best Places to Work in PA evening awards ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center in Hershey, Pa. The full rankings will be revealed then.
