- Program Overview: In the SIT Ghana: Social Transformation and Cultural Expression study abroad program, students examine Ghanaian social, political, and economic structures through the lens of Ghana's artistic and literary expressions. Topic areas considered in southern Ghana range from education and religious traditions unique to Africa, to the impact of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, to the role of Queenmothers in Krobo. Thematic seminars in northern Ghana examine topics such as the contrast between Western and traditionally trained midwives to the role of local markets in the global economy. Topics of inquiry include religion; identity studies; migration; political and economic development; and colonialism.

- Program Overview: There are three options dependent on language level: Option I is for students who wish to take all of their courses at Syracuse University's Center in Florence, Option II is for students with intermediate to advanced-intermediate Italian language proficiency who would like to immerse in intensive Italian language and cultural studies program, Option III is full immersion for students with advanced Italian language proficiency who would like to study alongside Italian students in selected courses at the University of Florence for one or two semesters.

- Program Overview: Examine Islam as a system of thought, Morocco's political system and monarchy, and the country's place in the Middle East and in African, Berber, and Arab cultures. Additional studies focus on women's place within Moroccan society and contemporary development challenges. Through the interdisciplinary coursework, students explore Moroccan society and culture, Arabic language, field research methodology, and independent research. The Culture and Society Seminar is divided into three components, each of which is coordinated by one or two scholars specialized in the field under question. Lecturers of renown as well as politicians and civil society activists are invited to talk to the students as part of this seminar. Intensive Arabic classes also provide for students at many levels of Arabic, allowing all students to understand the culture more deeply.

International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender (SIT)

- Program Overview: Based in Amsterdam, students explore the intersections of Dutch and international perspectives. Students select one Sexuality and Gender Seminar program module from choices including Critical Theory, Tolerance and Sexual Health Education, or Filmmaking with a Sexuality and Gender Lens (offered fall semester only). Each student also chooses a Field Study practicum with a Dutch or international organization. Coursework begins with a strong foundation in critical theory of sexuality and gender. All students attend the guest lecture series, which is presented by academics, service professionals and grassroots activists. The range of disciplines includes political science, anthropology, women's studies, homo studies, sociology, and sexology.

Women's Lives and Experiences in Nicaragua (University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire)

- Program overview: The women's movement in Nicaragua is arguably the most dynamic in Latin America. Nicaraguan women are taking charge of their lives and empowering themselves economically and politically. This program will engage students in the lives of some of these women. Talking with them about their societal roles and taking field trips to see different ways that women live will help students understand feminism in the context of a developing country and to become a more engaged citizen in the world community while, at the same time, becoming more proficient in Spanish. Students live with host families and will participate in the daily lives of Nicaraguan women.

- Program Overview: CIEE students are taught alongside University of Cape Town (UCT) undergraduates and are required to undertake a full program of courses. A full course load is considered three or four courses and a typical combination of courses includes two or three courses at the 200 level, and one course at the 300 level. Students are required to enroll in at least one course with specific African content or one that offers a distinctive African perspective in their area of interest, plus two or three elective courses. Courses may be taken in all University of Cape Town faculties excluding Health Sciences. Total recommended credit for the semester is 14-18 semester/21-27 quarter hours and for the academic year is 28-32 semester/42-48 quarter hours.

- Program Overview: The breadth and depth of our course offerings can be demonstrated by grouping them along the following curricular tracks: Public Policy, Politics, and International Relations; Economics; Humanities and Cultural Studies (which includes Women, Swedish Society, and Culture). All Program courses are taught in English. We do not require any prior background in Swedish Language nor is it required to take a language course while on the Program. However, we do recommend that students take a language course in Stockholm. - Program Overview: The following courses are offered for Women's and Gender Studies: Jane Austen, Patterns of Power: Gender, Race, Class and Sexuality in Contemporary Society, Nineteenth-Century Women Novelists: the Gothic and the Realistic, Women, Culture and Society in Eighteenth-Century England, The Writings of Virginia Woolf. Teaching takes place in small seminar groups (maximum 13 students) and tutorial-style classes. Many seminars also include study trips to course-connected locations and events and each semester includes a week-long residential at University College, Oxford and three days in Stratford-upon-Avon.

- Program Overview: Unlike many English universities, Bristol allows students to study in several different departments to create a varied class schedule and students take a varied number of courses, depending on course weight. Gender Studies is one of the top departments at the University. IFSA-Butler requires students to enroll in a full course load at the host institution as defined by IFSA-Butler. At the University of Bristol, a full course load consists of 60 Bristol credits per semester or 120 Bristol credits per year. Each Bristol credit is equivalent to 0.25 U.S. semester credit hours; if you study at Bristol for one semester and take 60 Bristol credits, you will earn 15 U.S. semester credit hours.

- Program Overview: Lancaster has an excellent English department with one of the few creative writing departments in the UK. Courses in the sciences are also strong as are women's studies, religious studies and education. A full-time course load generally includes three to five courses. You can choose courses from among several departments or concentrate in a single academic field. Additionally, internships and fieldwork assignments can sometimes be arranged for full-year or spring two-term students. Each department assigns an academic advisor for North American students to help ease your academic transition and advise on your studies. Additional academic offerings are the three pre-session courses offered before the start of the fall semester.

- Program Overview: The program in Vietnam is designed for students interested in developing a solid foundation in the economics, political science, and history of Vietnam and Cambodia while immersing themselves in the local communities of Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap. CIEE classes are taught in English, there is a five week field study in English at a Phnom Penh university, a language tutoring program, volunteer and internship opportunities, and a choice of on-campus accommodations or homestay.
