Tips for Academic Success

  • Attend Class! - sit at the front of the class.
  • Get to know your professor and come to them for extra help. Most facualty respect students who ask for help when they need it.
  • Ask questions - if you are confused you can bet that others are also.
  • Visit the Writing Center - they can help you with your papers and also provide some tutoring services.
  • Study in teams: the best way to learn material is by teaching it to others.
  • Use the library and ask the staff for help.
  • Find a quiet, comfortable place to study and use it EVERYDAY.
  • Start papers early and review notes regularly. Procrastination is the enemy.
  • Interrupt long periods of study with short breaks.
  • Mom and Dad were right - you really do need to get enough sleep, exercise and eat right.

  • Avoid alcohol and other drugs. These sap motivation and increase feelings of sadness and anxiety.
  • Get Organized: Purchase and use a weekly planner, develop a study schedule and make daily to-do lists.
  • Watch that negative self-talk! Your attitude and the way that you think about yourself and your abilities really does make a difference.
