H1N1 Update

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I write to update you on Bucknell's continued monitoring of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. As you are likely aware, a number of students and employees in the fall semester tested positive for type A influenza, which is presumed to be H1N1, or swine flu, based on the advice of public health officials. All of those students and employees have since recovered.

As of today, the University has no active cases of presumed swine flu. Students who are concerned that they may have H1N1 should call Bucknell's Office of Student Health Services at 577-1401 or, after hours, the Department of Public Safety at 577-3333.

Faculty and staff who are experiencing flu symptoms should contact their family physician or nearest hospital.

Although flu activity has declined, additional waves of seasonal and swine flu may occur throughout the remaining flu season, which could last through May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bucknell experiences numerous cases of the regular seasonal flu every year, as do universities and other institutions and communities across the country. Given the danger that flu poses to the health of individuals and our community, it is important to continue taking precautions to prevent and treat flu. Tips on protecting yourself from the flu and preventing its spread, as well as updates on presumed H1N1 cases, are available at www.bucknell.edu/swineflu.

The University will continue to monitor the H1N1 virus' spread and share with the campus any urgent information if necessary.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Donald Stechschulte
