LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University students will hold a Pool Pass fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 2, prior to the Family Weekend football game with Cornell in the Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
The table will be staffed by former students from Sue Ellen Henry's multiculturalism and education course who will hand out balloons and collect donations for the dedicated fund to support local low-income families' access to the Lewisburg Community Pool in the summer.
"Last year the community contributed $4,000, and five families took advantage of the reduced cost passes, a value of $1000," said Henry, an associate professor of education. "All families made some sort of financial commitment on their own — the passes were not entirely free and families paid what they could for a subsidized pass.
"In addition, two of these families took advantage of complimentary swim lessons that were offered by the Red Cross in coordination with the Pool Pass Fund," Henry added.
"With 2010 being the first year of this program, there was an uncertainty of how much money would be raised and how many passes would be available to the public," said Katie Davis, recreation coordinator for the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority (LARA).
"Now, knowing last year's success, we have a stronger confidence going into next summer. Plans are in the works to consider broader ways of advertising the program so more families can participate not only next summer but the many summer seasons to follow."
Last semester, Henry's students worked with LARA on a fundraising fun run/walk in memory of two local children who drowned in the Susquehanna River last year.
Assunda Rotolo, 11, of Lewisburg, and her cousin, Les Davis Jr., 8, of Mifflinburg, were playing in the river near the Lewisburg Bridge when the accident occurred.
Donations also are being accepted for the Pool Pass Project. Checks can be made out to LARA Pool Pass Fund and mailed directly to LARA at 629 Fairground Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
