Translated from the Italian
by Martha Cooley & Antonio Romani
Lavarello is the Lombard name of a fish living at the bottom of the lake. Its head is small, like that of someone who needn’t think much. But thanks to its form it adjusts itself to the depths. Its color is silver white. It stays inside the confines of the dark, cold water and is presumed lazy and peaceful.
On the fishmonger’s counter one can see it sometimes, its body crowned by the bright red of the gills.
