Emergency Response Procedures: Campus Evacuation
A. In the event that the evacuation of a building or area on campus is required, the Public Safety dispatcher will initiate the proper notification procedure for contacting appropriate personnel to advise them of the nature of the evacuation.
B. Public Safety will initiate and supervise the evacuation with the cooperation of the Facilities and the individual building managers, resident directors or resident assistants for the particular building or area on campus.
C. When an evacuation alarm sounds, do not use the elevator. It may become inoperative.
D. Assist disabled persons in exiting the building. If these persons are unable to use the stairs, assist them to a stairwell or elevator where they will remain. Notify Public Safety officers on the scene where these persons are. They will assist in the evacuation of disabled persons. Quickly evacuate the building calmly and quietly. Walk, do not run to the nearest exit or stairwell.
E. Evacuate to a distance of at least 500 feet from the building and out of the way of emergency personnel. Do not return to the building until instructed to do so by the Public Safety officers.
