Research Interests

  • James's research interests are in experimental atomic physics and involve using lasers to manipulate and probe atoms. Creating highly polarized and long-lasting atomic states makes possible extremely precise measurements of magnetic fields. Such measurements are a key component of many important scientific and technological applications, ranging from landmine-removal to studies of biomagnetism.
