The President's Golf Bag
I was talking to someone about our golf club the other day and it occurred to me this place is certainly greater than the sum of its parts. The casual observer might begin characterizing the club by describing the slope and rating and state further that ours is a shot maker’s layout due to the relative tightness and modest length of the holes. Someone more experienced might describe the club attracting play because of how well it is always conditioned. They will also undoubtedly describe the warm welcome received from the staff at the pro shop and how the general feel to the place is relaxed and cordial. I think for those with a long-term connection to the Club, there are many more subtle and equally important qualities that can be related. I remember playing with three friends; it must have been 8 years ago. We were all standing near our drives on 11 getting ready for our second shots and it occurred to me what a great time I was having. Freezing that frame for a moment and forgetting about the golf ball, I saw four guys standing in a field enjoying the day and each other’s company. I couldn’t think of an occasion or set of circumstances where those elements would have come together as well as they did at that moment. There are other memories too of course that have created a kind of Bucknell Golf Club Album that I can always draw from. I know ours is primarily a place to play golf, which, of course, is no small achievement to do properly. I think however there is a tapestry that has been woven for each of us that depicts the people and events that makes the Club part of who we are. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members and I hope everyone has an enjoyable season.
