LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University will present Shakespeare's classic tale, "Romeo and Juliet," in a co-production of the Acting Company and the Guthrie Theater on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m.
"The Acting Company is one of the treasures of America," said Bill Boswell, executive director of the Weis Center. "The company not only can be counted on to produce theater of the highest quality, but it has proved for many years to be the spawning ground for a lot of young actors, many of whom have gone on to major stage and film careers. So this is also a chance to catch tomorrow's stars and be able to say 'I saw them when...'
"This time the company brings to life Shakespeare's iconic romantic tragedy of innocent young lovers falling victim to family hatred and cruel destiny in a production that is immediate and deeply felt," he said.
The performance is directed by Penny Metropulos from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
The Acting Company continues its 38-year tradition of bringing touring classical productions, talented young actors and teaching artists into communities across America. Honored by the TONY Awards for Excellence in Theater, the Company has won the Obie, Audelco, Citibank's Excellence in Education and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards. Since its founding by the legendary John Houseman and Margot Harley in 1972, The Acting Company has performed 135 productions touring to 48 states and 10 foreign countries.
Tickets for the performance are $20 per person. Discounts for senior citizens and students are available.
Tickets for Weis Center series performances are available in person from the Campus Box Office in the Weis Center weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; from the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University bookstore in Lewisburg, weekdays and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30 to 4 p.m.; or the Campus Activities and Programs office on the ground floor of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell, weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
