LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University has received a $1 million grant from The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation to endow a scholarship program.
The grant from the Harrisburg-based foundation will provide annual, renewable rewards to enrolled students with financial need.
"Scholarships are Bucknell's top campaign priority, and we are extremely grateful to the Stabler Foundation for this gift," President John Bravman said. "The University is committed to making a Bucknell education accessible to the best students, regardless of family finances. Scholarship support helps many superb students to attend Bucknell and creates a vibrant campus community."
David Foreman, director of corporate and foundation relations at Bucknell, said that the gift is one of the largest Bucknell has received for scholarships from a private foundation.
"The fact that the Stabler Foundation has fully established a new scholarship program in perpetuity speaks both to their generosity and their strong belief in the value of a Bucknell education," Foreman said.
The Stabler Foundation was founded in 1966 to benefit charitable, religious, scientific, literary and educational purposes. It seeks to foster a sense of responsibility and gratitude among individual beneficiaries of its grants and will encourage scholarship recipients to give back to Bucknell after they graduate.
A top priority
Each year Bucknell provides financial aid for more than 60 percent of enrolled students, primarily to
assist those who would not be able to enroll at the University without such assistance.
"Scholarship aid is critical to helping Bucknell attract talented students from all backgrounds, including low-income families, minorities, nontraditional students and first-generation college students," said Vice President for Enrollment Management Kurt Thiede. "It is a vital component of the University's efforts to increase the diversity of the student body."
The Stabler grant is one of four foundation gifts at the $1 million level or higher that Bucknell has received for scholarships. Others were a 1997 gift from the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund for $1.15 million; a 1998 gift from the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation for $1 million; and a 2007 gift from the Charles T. Bauer Family Foundation for $1 million.
