Featurettes: Key Points to Remember

Complement Your Page

The primary audience for our public website is external visitors, and "Bucknell in Pictures" is their chance to see our beautiful campus. If you don't have something specific to reference in a featurette, use the default. These photos keep the website consistent and attractive, and they personalize the campus for prospective students, faculty and staff as well as university alumni and friends.

Keep Your Viewing Area Balanced

  • Left Column vs. Right Column (public site)
If you have short text in the body area, consider using just one featurette on the right. If you have a moderate amount of text in the body area, then two featurettes might work. Your page will look best if the featurettes do not take up more space than your body copy.
  • Top area vs. bottom area (myBucknell site)
Since featurettes in myBucknell appear at the bottom of the page, they will work best on short pages. Readers like to stay “above the fold” which means the initial view they see on their monitors. Also, your page will probably look better with two featurettes instead of just one. Remember, the vast majority of myBucknell pages do *NOT* use featurettes.
  • Images vs. text
If your public site page contains a lot of images, you’ll probably want to replace the “Bucknell in Pictures” featurette. You don't want visitors to be confused about where to look. In the same way, if your page is a text-heavy page, you can use images in your featurettes to balance the visual presentation.

Image Size

Images for featurettes can be no wider than 285 pixels. As with all images on your pages, these images should be cropped, color-corrected, sized and “saved for web or other devices” in Photoshop before uploading them into Ingeniux. If your image is wider than 285 pixels, Ingeniux will bump your featurette to the bottom of the page.

Previewing Your Featurette

To "Preview" your featurette, add it to a page and "Preview" that page.

Deleting Featurettes

Before you delete a featurette, you need to be sure it is not attached to any pages. Search for the featurette by typing the xID into the Search field in Ingeniux, and then "clear" the featurette from those pages before deleting the featurette.

Featurette Spots on a Page

If your pages don’t have featurette spots, they can be added. Just send a list of pages to webdevopment@bucknell.edu, and we’ll add them for you.

Campus-Wide Appeal

Are you featurette-ing something that has broad campus appeal like a speaker or event? Contact Web Development so that we can add your featurette to the "Created for Campus Use" folder. This will allow other users to easily add your featurette to their pages.

What Can Be in a Featurette?

Any HTML can be used in the featurette, so as you begin to expand what you want from your site, consider requesting advanced featurettes like video, RSS feeds, carousel slideshows, etc. These are elements that Web Development can create for you.
