Mandala Creation
in front of Art Building
Sunday, August 28, 2011 – 1 - 4 p.m.
At Arts. Everywhere., a new mandala will premiere. This one uses three related words, and will be constructed from pebbles and stones. It will also be transitory in nature, and the effects of foot traffic, weather and time will gradually alter it. Other events, such as excavating and truck traffic, will have sudden impacts, as will using the mandala as the base for proposed three dimensional installations and events.
When the mandala is being made, no one will know what the message is. It will best be viewed and puzzled out from above, by climbing the stairs of the Art Building to the third (unused) floor and looking down, or by climbing the hill of the Grove to view it from above.
Interestingly, the best way to perceive the messages is not necessarily from left to right, but to relax into the puzzle and use both line and spaces to enter the word. This is something we do without thinking whenever we read something legible, but here the mandala and its strong image/icon brings our whole brain into play, and the word appears later.
If it rains, this event will be rescheduled.
