LEWISBURG, Pa. — Todd Murray and Friends will open the Weis Center season with "Croon" on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University.
Murray, who grew up in Montandon and performed for years with locally based Re-Creation, presents a tribute to crooning with a program of standards, newer pop and his own originals.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to perform back home. No matter where my work takes me, the Susquehanna Valley, the mountains, the people, the familiar haunts, are my definition of home," said Murray.
"It is rare that I am able to bring myself and my trio to Central Pennsylvania. As a matter of fact, this is the first time I could afford to bring the band. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces in the crowd, many of which are directly responsible for the path I have chosen as a career."
After graduating from Susquehanna University, he worked as a singer and actor at Opryland USA, Disneyland in Tokyo, and summer stock in Pennsylvania.
His move to New York City brought him many off-Broadway and regional roles, as well as the first National Broadway tour of "The Secret Garden." He has performed at New York's Town Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and many engagements at Feinstein's At The Regency.
He can be heard singing in "Showgirls: Glitz and Angst," in the HBO series "America Undercover" as well as the feature movie, "Die, Mommy, Die." He has been nominated for numerous awards for his vocals, CDs and song writing.
"Todd Murray is a songwriter's dream," reviewed Cabaret Scenes. "He sings the songs as they were written, and he sings them in a dreamy, stunningly rapturous style in a strong, steady baritone with a rich, smooth tone. He traces the history of crooning - defined as singing intimately with a microphone. Given that singing intimately is what Murray does best, he excelled in virtually every number."
