SBDC workshop: 'ADA and employment discrimination laws'

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Bucknell University will offer the workshop, "Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Employment Discrimination Laws and Your Small Business," Friday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SBDC Education Center in the DeWitt Building at 416 Market Street in Lewisburg.
The workshop discussion will include discussions by Regina Jones, regional outreach coordinator for the U.S Department of Labor; Jennifer McDannell, a supervisory trial attorney at the United States Department of Justice; and Mary Tiernan, with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
Jones will discuss the Office of Federal Contract Compliance programs, especially strengthening employment protections for individuals with disabilities. Jones monitors the outreach efforts and activities for four district offices in the Mid-Atlantic region. She is a graduate of Tuskegee (Institute) University, and attended the National Institute of Paralegal Training in Atlanta.
McDannell will discuss how Title 3 applies to public businesses including restaurants, specifically removing architectural barriers, ensuring effective communication with customers, and use of service animals in public facilities, followed by a question-and-answer session. In her position with the Civil Rights Division, Disability Rights Section, McDannell supervises investigators, attorneys and architects on investigations of businesses under the ADA, and provides technical assistance, training and public presentations regarding ADA obligations. A graduate of Tulane University and Duke University School of Law, she is the adviser to the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia's Working Parents Forum.
Tiernan will discuss EEOC procedures, tips for dealing with the EEOC, and EEOC initiatives, followed by a question-and-answer session. Program analyst for the EEOC's Philadelphia District Office, Tiernan manages the office's outreach and public affairs program and provides training and technical assistance to employers and employees within the district. She is a graduate of Villanova University School of Law.
The cost to attend is $10 per person and includes a one-year subscription to Inc. magazine and lunch. Registration is required as seating is limited.
