"I think my internship made me more confident in my professional abilities and made me realize I shouldn't have been as intimidated as I was to work in a professional environment because if you are smart, capable and work hard you will succeed."

Emily Bruno

Describe your duties:

I helped to create sales presentations for advertising directors and representatives' use, kept sales and advertising documents up to date in the system, researched potential clients for the magazine, prepared and presented marketing research project on competitor magazine.

What did you most enjoy about your internship?

I learned more than I ever thought I would in a short amount of time. I think that being in this type of competitive and fast paced work environment taught me that I could successfully think on my feet, work quickly and efficiently, and use my judgment for certain things. I think my internship made me more confident in my professional abilities and made me realize I shouldn't have been as intimidated as I was to work in a professional environment because if you are smart, capable and work hard you will succeed.

What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?

The long hours of the work day because of my commute into New York from the suburbs! Also, my internship involved going to some night events which wouldn't end until 11 pm but then you had to be there bright and early the next morning. You have to be ON all day everyday, not like college where you can take a nap in between classes.

How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship?

My experience public speaking in front of classes as well as doing research projects helped me very much when it came to researching, preparing, and presenting a marketing research presentation on a competitor magazine to a room full of people. I was very nervous but tried to remind myself how often I have to give presentations in classes at Bucknell, and how it really isn't any different.

How did your internship prepare you for a career?

The past two summers I have had very different internships, one in a museum environment (at the New York Botanical Gardens in the LuEsther T. Mertz Libarary) and one in publishing (COSMO). They couldn't have been more different but there were aspects of both I loved. I am an Art History major with minors in English and Classics so I think I can really go anyplace with the broad humanities education I have received. I will probably apply to jobs in both fields!
