He specializes in 19th and 20th century African American History and Agricultural History.  He is currently researching how debates over debt and labor in the 1880s shaped the political values of farming communities in the American South still seeking to recover from the traumatic political and economic shockwaves caused by the American Civil War and Reconstruction.
