LEWISBURG, Pa. — The 2010 award-winning documentary "Waste Land" will be shown Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Theatre in Lewisburg.

The documentary is the first for the fall semester in the continuing Green Screens film series, sponsored by the Bucknell University Environmental Center (BUEC).

"Waste Land" is presented as part of the Bucknell Film/Media Series. Admission is $2.

The documentary focuses on catadores, self-designated pickers of recyclable materials in the world's largest garbage dump outside Rio de Janeiro, who create art from trash.

Brazilian artist Vik Muniz interacted with the catadores for three years. His initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage, but Muniz's collaboration with the characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives.

Called an uplifting documentary that highlights the transformative power of art and the beauty of the human spirit, "Waste Land" was directed by Lucy Walker and received the Academy Award nomination for best feature documentary, the audience award for best international documentary at Sundance Film Festival, and awards from Amnesty International and the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Wendy Chou, with Tulu Bayar, associate professor of art, and Peter Wilshusen, executive director of the BUEC and David and Patricia Ekedahl Professor of Environmental Studies.

The Green Screens films series continues through the fall semester with "Small Farm Rising", a documentary that explores the reinvention of small-scale agriculture in America, on Oct. 2; "Biophilic Design", a documentary that showcases buildings that connect people and nature, on Oct. 30; and "The Story of Change", which argues that citizens — not shoppers — hold the key to a better future, on Nov. 27.

The Campus Theatre is located at located at 413 Market St. in Lewisburg.
