Seeking LEED^® Certification

The Kappa Delta Rho fraternity house is currently pursuing LEED^® Silver certification. During design and construction, Bucknell chose to implement many green and sustainable features like those detailed below.

Construction Waste More than 50% of construction waste was diverted from landfills. Recyclable resources were redirected back to the manufacturing process.	Recycling Area Two recycling areas promote the reduction of waste going into landfills.
Covered Bike Storage Parking is limited. Bicycling and carpooling are enouraged through convenient canopies and preferred parking for fuel-efficient vehicles.	Regional Materials Steel, concrete, brick and drywall were some of the materials extracted, harvested, recovered or manufactured within 500 miles of the site.
Eliminating Irrigation The use of potable water for irrigation has been eliminated through the use of native plant species.	Sediment Control Plan This plan reduces negative impacts on water quality and promotes infiltration. Storm-water runoff is minimized to limit hydrology disruption.
Energy Performance These buildings use only green power. With this optimum performance, they use less energy than conventional systems.	Shade Trees The use of shade trees reduces excess absorption of heat, increases occupant comfort, and minimizes heat impact on wildlife habitats.
Lighting Design Efficient lighting design was used to reduce light pollution.	Smoke-Free This is a smoke-free facility. On-site smoking is prohibited within 25 feet of entries, outdoor intakes, and operable windows.
Low Flow Fixtures Water use within the buildings is reduced by 36% through the installation of low flow fixtures, including low flow sinks, toilets, and showers.	Sustainable Wood More than 70% of construction wood products were FSC^®-certified, encouraging responsible forest management.
Low VOC-Emitting All composite wood, paints, flooring, adhesives and sealants are low VOC-emitting, reducing the amount of indoor air contaminants.	Sustaining Comfort and Well-Being Indoor air quality is monitored through the use of sensors in order to promote resident well-being and comfort.
Occupancy Sensors Operable windows and occupancy sensors reduce energy use.	Windows Exterior views are provided to the resident through the installation of windows in 90% of the spaces.
Recycled Content More than 20% of materials were sourced from recycled content including concrete, drywall, carpet, linoleum and vinyl, and composite tiles.
