Student Voter Registration Information

As a college student in Pennsylvania you have two choices on where you can register to vote in the upcoming November election:

  • Using your current on- or off-campus address, you can register in Union County, Pa., the county in which Bucknell is located. You can then vote in person in Union County, Pa. at your local designated polling place.
  • You can register or remain registered at your current permanent home address, whether it is located in another Pennsylvania county or another state. You can then vote in person in your "home" county at your designated polling place, or vote using an absentee ballot (see absentee ballot information below).
To register to vote in Union County, Pa.:
  • Fill out a PA voter registration form
  • If you live on campus:
    • Area #4 is the place where you SLEEP. Example: 224 Smith Hall, Lewisburg
    • Area #5 is your mailing address. Example: 701 Moore Ave. C3333
  • If you live off campus:
    • Area #4 & #5 will be the same - your apartment address
  • Mail the form to:

    155 N 15th St.
    Lewisburg, Pa. 17837-8822
  • Wait for your voter registration card to arrive in the mail. It will include the location of your local polling place (you can also check the location of your local polling place online).
  • Vote at your local polling station on Tuesday, November 6.
To register to vote in a Pennsylvania county outside of Union County:
  • Fill out a PA voter registration form (the same form can be used for all PA counties).
  • Use your permanent address from your "home" county.
  • Mail the form to your "home" county voter registration office.
  • A complete list of county voter registration addresses is included on the PA voter registration form
  • Vote at your local polling station on Tuesday, November 6, or with an absentee ballot (information on absentee voting below).
Important Pennsylvania Voter Registration Dates
  • 10.9.12 - General election registration deadline
  • 10.30.12 - Last day to apply for absentee ballots
  • 11.2.12 - Last day for County Board of Elections to receive completed absentee ballot
  • *PA voter registration forms can be found at the ELC Post Office, the Switchboard and online.
To register to vote in your "home" county located outside of Pennsylvania:
  • Fill out a voter registration form provided by your "home" county or state voter registration office/board of elections.
    a. Most voter registration offices provide forms online
  • Follow the instructions provided by your "home" county or state voter registration office/board of elections.
  • **Regardless of where you are registered to vote, if you are unable to attend your polling place in person on Election Day, you may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot.**
To vote by absentee ballot in Pennsylvania:
  • Registered to vote
  • Apply for an absentee ballot in the county in which you are registered to vote by 10/13/12.
  • Application forms are available at several locations, including any county voter registration office, and online
  • Once your application is accepted, you will receive an absentee ballot in the mail.
  • Complete the absentee ballot and return to the voter registration office in the county in which you are registered to vote by 5 p.m. on 11/2/12.
  • Absentee voting rules and deadlines vary. If you are voting absentee in another state, please contact your "home" county or state for more information.

New Pennsylvania Voter ID Law

A new Pennsylvania law requires that all voters show a valid for of photo identification when they vote. Valid forms of photo IDs include:

  • Photo IDs issued by the U.S. Federal Government or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • PA Driver’s License or Non-driver’s License photo ID (IDs are valid for voting purposes 12 months past expiration date. Out-of-state licences are not considered a valid form of photo identification).
  • Valid U.S. passport
  • U.S. Military ID
  • College/University ID

Please note: In order for your Bucknell student ID to be used as a valid form of photo identification under the new Pennsylvania law, you must have a University issued expiration sticker affixed to it. The CAP center and the Switchboard will begin distributing expiration stickers on Monday, Sept. 17. The CAP center will distribute stickers Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Switchboard will distribute the stickers Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
