Internship Title: Editorial Assistant
Employer and location: Modern Luxury, Atlanta, GA
Describe your duties:
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
My internship was a fantastic experience in the magazine publishing business. It may not be as fast paced as a daily or weekly publication, but monthly magazines take a lot of work. From pictures, to articles, to interviews, to calendar events, there is a lot to be done in 25 days. I loved my internship because this insight into the publishing world. Being able to write my own articles and see my name published in the magazines was also really exciting. And we also got to go to some of the photo shoots and help out there.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
The only difficult aspect of my internship was not having a voice in a lot of things. My opinions could be given, but whether they were considered was another issue altogether. My boss was great and always wanted our opinions, but whether the other editors agreed on our ideas was another matter.
How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship? How did your internship prepare you for a career?
Bucknell obviously focuses on time management and research so I was well equipped in those areas coming into my internship. My internship also taught me a lot about the importance of deadlines, getting copyright permission, and how to write to your specific audience of readers.
What recommendations do you have for other students considering doing an internship?
Make sure it's something you're really interested in and considering as a career. If it's just an internship for the sake of an internship you might not get as much out of it as you would if you loved it. Even if it's remotely related that's better than something entirely unrelated. My internship was in publishing and one day I hope to publish work and so the insight I gained this summer was extremely helpful and interesting.
