Bucknell to host 'Design Exposition'

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University will host the seventh annual Engineering and Science Education Exposition on Monday, Dec. 3, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in Larison Dining Hall. || Podsquad video 2011
More than 50 student teams will share inquiry-based teaching units and educational devices designed and built to teach engineering and science concepts — such as motion, force, electricity, magnetism, chemistry, structural engineering and construction — to students in kindergarten to eighth grade.
"Our students in the Engineering 100 course complete comprehensive and innovative design projects, displayed at the Exposition, that meet specific requirements, on time and on budget, for real customers," said Jim Orbison, professor of civil and environmental engineering and course coordinator.
"Bucknell education majors, led by Lori Smolleck, associate professor of education, and local scout leaders served as project customers and advisers," he said.
"The event is appropriate for teachers and volunteers looking for ideas as well as supervised children in the appropriate age range," said Margot Vigeant, associate dean of engineering.
"All educational devices and teaching units will be given away to interested educators, leaders and volunteers at the end of the evening," she said.
Gizmos / Teaching Units will address the following educational areas:
- PA Teaching Standards for Elementary Education in Science and Technology (3.4.4.A, 3.4.4.B, 3.4.4.C, 3.6.4.C)
- Cub Scout Webelos 2 "Engineer" and "Scientist" Activity Badge requirements (NOTE: these match well with Junior Girl Scouts "Making it Matter" and science badges)
