What is Environmental Engineering?
Environmental Engineers apply engineering and science principles to solve or prevent environmental problems. Practicing environmental engineers often work on mitigating various forms of pollution.
What are emerging areas in Environmental Engineering?
Environmental Engineers are engaged in development, design, construction, and operation of systems that recover valuable resources such as energy and nutrients from what was previously considered waste materials. Environmental engineers are also engaged in comprehensive evaluation of the long-term sustainability of engineering projects by using a process known as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA enables engineers to evaluate the entire impact of a project including raw materials, natural resources, energy use, pollution production, re-use, and recycling. Environmental engineers also focus on optimizing processes to minimize energy use.
What can Environmental Engineers do?
Environmental Engineers find opportunities in the private sector with engineering consulting companies and with major corporations. Graduates also are well prepared to work with local, regional, state, and federal government agencies as well as non-governmental organizations such as the Peace Corps. Environmental engineers design, construct, and operate systems that produce safe drinking water, remove pollutants from wastewater and groundwater, and remediate contaminated soil, water, and air at hazardous waste sites.
What is the projected demand for Environmental Engineers?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of Environmental Engineers will grow 22 percent, which is faster than average for all occupations.
When did the Environmental Engineering degree program become available at Bucknell?
The Environmental Engineering degree program was approved by the Board of Trustees in October 2012, and we will welcome our inaugural class in the fall semester of 2013. However, the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering has offered courses in environmental engineering for many years as part of the Civil Engineering degree program.
