The Hoeganaes Corporation

The Hoeganaes Corporation is a world leader in the manufacture of powdered metal, supplying material to the automotive, hand tool, and hydraulics industries. But when a customer cancelled their orders of due to a sulfur smell, they came to the specialty Engineering Development Services of the SBDC for assistance.

Tapping into the faculty expertise and advanced laboratory facilities at Bucknell University, Jeremy Horning, an engineering student consultant, performed analytic testing of samples from their Watsontown manufacturing site to identify the odor-causing compounds. This assistance helped them resolve the problem through improved chemical compounding leading to reopened business relationships with their customer. Bucknell's SBDC is the first in the nation to be hosted by an Engineering College and is the provider of direct engineering services to a statewide network of 18 centers.
