LEWISBURG, Pa. — Vocal trio Black Sea Hotel will perform in concert Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Samek Art Gallery of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell University.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, is part of the continuing Gallery Series at Bucknell. The Gallery Series, a public program of experimental and world music, was founded by William Duckworth, professor emeritus of music, as part of his commitment to fostering new audiences for contemporary music.

The New York-based a cappella trio recreates traditional Balkan music, finding new ways to use melody, harmony and rhythm to tell ancient stories. Their voices create a harmonic bland that has been called haunting and otherworldly.

Black Sea Hotel has performed at venues as diverse as concert halls, universities, downtown clubs, folk festivals and the Bulgarian embassy. They have collaborated with such musical luminaries as Kremena Stancheva of Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, beatboxer Adam Matta of Carolina Chocolate Drops fame, Ansambl Mastika, and Raya Brass Band.

The group was the Editor's Pick and Featured Artist on CD Baby, number 2 on iTunes World Music Top Albums, and number 18 on Lucid Culture's top 50 best albums of 2009. In addition to PRI's The World Global Hit segment, Black Sea Hotel has appeared on WFMU, WNYC, and Sirius XM Radio Live on Fine Tuning.

Other events in Bucknell's Gallery Series this semester include an evening of new works by Bucknell composer Paul Botelho on Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rooke Recital Hall.
