LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Bucknell Brass Quintet will perform a St. Patrick's Day concert on Sunday, March 17, at 2:30 p.m. in Rooke Chapel at Bucknell University.
The concert is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.
The three-part program will include classic works for organ and brass, popular American music from the 1860s, and hymn tunes arranged for brass in a jazz style.
Three of the works were arranged specifically for the Bucknell Brass Quintet by its hornist, William Kenny.
"We will be playing a collection of songs that were popular during the Civil War period — something we wanted to do to commemorate this summer's 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg," said Kenny, who is a professor of music at Bucknell..
The concert will conclude with a lively jig-like dance, "St. Patrick's Day."
The Bucknell Brass Quintet comprises brass faculty members and artist performers who appear regularly in performances at Bucknell and throughout the region.
In addition to Kenny, members of the quintet include Dale Orris, trumpet, and Rick Benjamin, tuba, of Lewisburg; Robert LaBarca, trombone, of State College; and Michael Trego, trumpet, of Port Royal. David Cover, Bucknell University organist, will join the quintet on several pieces.
