LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University will host concerts by the Rooke Chapel Ringers and the Rooke Chapel Choir. Both concerts, which are free and open to the public, will be conducted by William Payn, professor of music at Bucknell.
The Rooke Chapel Ringers concert will be held Saturday, April 27, at 8 p.m. in Rooke Chapel.
The program features original compositions including two works by Payn; music based on hymn tunes including the traditional Dona Nobis Pacem, arranged for handbells and 'cello; and popular classics arranged for bells including Flight of the Bumblebee played by the six graduating seniors; Gwerzy, a fast-paced piece composed by members of the Irish band Kila; and Adele's Rolling in the Deep. The performance will conclude with the traditional Farandole by Georges Bizet.
The Rooke Chapel Choir concert, "Prisms of Light," will be held Sunday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Rooke Chapel.
The concert features several works containing references to light including Morten Lauridsen's "Lux Aeterna", a five movement work for chorus and chamber orchestra. Other works on the program are: Samuel Barber's transcription of "Adagio for Strings" for chorus and string orchestra and "The Ground", a new work by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo for chorus, string orchestra and piano.
The choir will honor the victims of the Boston Marathon incident by singing "In Remembrance" composed by Jeffery Ames. Several traditional African-American spirituals and American folk hymns will conclude the program.
