Bucknell Buddies
In the spring of 2002, the Office of Service Learning hired a VISTA worker to coordinate an after-school tutoring program and outreach to Head Start sites in the local school districts. The newly hired VISTA coordinator implemented tutor training with Bucknell University Education faculty and Lewisburg Area Kelly Elementary school staff.
At the start, 72 Bucknell students began by providing tutoring to 59 second and third graders struggling with math and reading skills. In all 85 volunteers provided a total of 951 hours of community service through the after school and Head Start programs.
Now in it's third full year, the program has been expanded to as many as 115 Bucknell students tutoring 80 school age and preschool children in local areas.
