About East Asian Studies
Whether students study the liberal arts, the sciences, the social sciences, business, or engineering, a knowledge of Western culture alone is inadequate to meet the demands of a world that is increasingly international. Asia and the Pacific Rim are rapidly emerging as major forces in international affairs.
The opportunities for interesting and challenging careers in Asia for our graduates are virtually unlimited. Opportunities await in education, business, science, government, law, medicine, engineering, cultural and technological exchange. Bucknell graduates live and work in Tokyo, Kyoto, Beijing, and other Asian cities. Companies such as Nomura, Nikko, Sony, the Bank of Tokyo, and General Motors actively recruit graduates from the humanities, business, the sciences, and engineering who have East Asian studies as a dimension of their education.
Students majoring in East Asian studies combine their language training with opportunities for study in East Asia. Students are encouraged to spend their junior year in Beijing, Kyoto, Nagoya, Seoul, Singapore, Taiwan, or Tokyo. Whether a course or two or a major in East Asian studies, the study of Asia provides a window to new experiences and a mirror for old ones.
