Applying for Admission to the Major

Although anyone can take economics courses, students must apply for admission to the major in the spring of their sophomore year. We admit approximately 100 majors per class year. When the number of applicants reaches above the threshold of 100, acceptance to the economics major will emphasize academic achievement, with emphasis on performance in economics classes.

If you are considering applying to be an economics major, we strongly urge you to register for economics courses during your first year. (see FAQs page for suggestions)

General Requirements for the Major

The economics major requires these core courses:

  • Economics 103 (Economic principles)
  • Economics 256 (Intermediate Microeconomics)
  • Economics 257 (Intermediate Macroeconomics)
  • Economics 258 (Intermediate Political Economy)

Plus at least four economics courses outside the core, and at least two at the 300 or 400 level. No more than two of these courses can be transferred from study abroad programs or from other universities.

In addition, you must complete:

  • Mathematics 192 or 201 (Calculus)
  • Mathematics 216 (Statistics)

Minoring in Economics

The requirements for the minor in Economics are Economics 103 plus four Economics electives at the 200-level or above.
