LEWISBURG, Pa.— Sixteen local families have received pool passes this summer through a fundraiser coordinated by Bucknell University students and the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority.
In April, students in Sue Ellen Henry's class hosted a 5K fun run/walk to support the pool pass project. More than $3,000 was raised through community contributions. Funds raised support families in need additional support for a family pool pass to the Lewisburg Community Pool.
"Each family is asked to contribute and a significant number offered between $20 and $75, so a grand total of $403 was collected from these 16 families for their contribution, which goes directly back into the fund," said Henry, associate professor of education at Bucknell.
"The pool pass project, in its second year, honors the memory of two local children who drowned in the Susquehanna River in August 2009," said Katie Davis, LARA's recreation coordinator.
Assunda Rotolo, 11, of Lewisburg, and her cousin, Les Davis Jr., 8, of Mifflinburg, were playing in the river near the Lewisburg Bridge when the accident occurred.
