Bucknell's Campus Master Plan is guiding the University in constructing new buildings and spaces, conserving energy, managing water use and enhancing the landscape. As we adapt our residential liberal arts environment to fulfill our mission in the 21st-century, this plan will ensure that Bucknell remains one of the most beautiful and functional institutions of higher learning well into the future.
Priority: Academic Space
Our most important priority for Bucknell's physical plant is to create new academic spaces that increase the number of classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices and common areas on campus. Academic West, the first academic building constructed at Bucknell since 2004, attests to our commitment to meeting those needs.
The 70,000-square-foot facility, which opened for classes in August 2013, contains 65 faculty offices, along with large and medium-sized classrooms, laboratories and hearth space for faculty and students to gather outside of class time. It is LEED certified at the silver level, meeting strict standards for energy efficiency and environmental impact and stewardship.
Our next planned academic facility, Academic East, will face Academic West, completing the new quad south of Bertrand Library. The 50,000-square-foot building will house classrooms, offices, laboratories and hearth space for engineering and life sciences, creating a nexus for healthcare studies.
Priority: Residential Space
In spring 2013, the Board of Trustees approved plans to build four new residence halls and a student commons in the south part of campus. Expected to open in fall 2015, the new facilities will house 340 juniors and seniors and bring back to campus 300 students living downtown, furthering our commitment to being a residential university.
We are planning other projects to evolve over the next decade. Check this website for photos and updates on our progress.
