Service-learning refers to educational experiences that link academic course work with efforts to meet a community need. This kind of learning promotes:

  • knowledge of course concepts and application of disciplinary material
  • understanding of the field of study in a broader context
  • a sense of civic responsibility

To facilitate service-learning opportunities, the Office of Civic Engagement links teachers and students to local organizations with identified needs.  We conduct workshops for faculty, provide support materials, and play the role of "matchmaker," connecting faculty and students to area agencies and groups. Ideally, the interactions are mutually beneficial, ones where students can both learn and contribute and where community partners gain from the support of service-learners.

Civic engagement becomes then an integral part of the Bucknell educational experience as we help prepare students to use their knowledge and skills in professional and public life.
