Speak UP Bucknell is a peer education group, coordinated by the Women's Resource Center and Psychological Services. The group works to prevent sexual misconduct on campus. Speak UP Bucknell presents workshops on topics such as sexual assault and dating violence and also conducts campus outreach.

Speak UP Bucknell emphasizes a positive bystander approach that assumes everyone has a role to play in ending sexual misconduct on campus. Becoming a peer educator provides a unique opportunity for members of the Bucknell community to take on a leadership role in educating themselves and their fellow Bucknell students about important issues facing our community.

During the 2012-2013 academic year, Speak UP Bucknell peers presented to approximately 1250 students, including all incoming freshmen and all 11 Bucknell fraternity chapters. Peers were also involved in planning the annual "Take Back the Night" program and other outreach events throughout the year.

Meet the 2013-14 Peers

If you see something, say something.

Positive bystanders are individuals who witness emergencies or situations that could lead to criminal events and choose to intervene and prevent the situation from escalating.

The bystander approach to sexual violence prevention puts the responsibility of stopping sexual violence on the community, rather than on the victim-survivor.

Helping a Victim-Survivor

When victim-survivors disclose their sexually violent experience, it is important to serve as a positive bystander and source of support as they work through their reactions to the trauma. It is important to remember that a victim-survivor disclosed their assault because they trust you.
