Internship Title: Research Experience for Undergraduates

Describe your duties:

I conducted research in pure mathematics with a small group of students from around the country. The culmination of our research was to present our work in both a colloquium style presentation, and a written report which is currently under revision for submission for publication.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

The ability to submerse myself in research for many hours a day may seem daunting, but it was a very exciting and challenging experience. The rush of working for weeks on a single problem and suddenly realizing its solution is one of the most rewarding feelings I know.

What did you enjoy least about your internship? What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?

I was somewhat overwhelmed by the caliber of the other students. My research partners were from Virginia Tech and Princeton, so I constantly felt as though I had less to offer to ideas and discussions, however I later realized that this was not founded.

How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship?

The mathematics department at Bucknell had truly prepared me to think critically and understand the immense work ethic required to conduct research.

How did your internship prepare you for a career?

This research provided me the opportunity to confirm my future wishes to continue studying through graduate school and pursue some research-based field of mathematics. I now understand the patience and perseverance required to become a successful mathematician.

What recommendations do you have for other students considering doing an internship?

I would recommend attempting anything and everything. Only by trial and error can one actually learn what he or she likes and dislikes. Organization and preparedness are both aspects that I found completely crucial in my research as well as a willingness to submit myself to unknown circumstances. As long as one is open and eager to learn, he or she will certainly succeed.
