My Experience:

This summer, I served as the Program Assistant for Curriculum Development at Moving Creations, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA. Moving Creations is a non-profit organization that promotes youth development, leadership, and community revitalization through transformational performances created by teens. More specifically, I helped to develop the Girls on the Move Project, which aims to empower adolescent females living in high poverty communities through research-driven, arts-based transformational education. In the upcoming school year, the Girls on the Move Project will be implemented at Germantown High School as an after-school program; this summer I helped prepare for the implementation by creating a 200-page project manual containing history, philosophy, and structure of the organization, detailed curriculums for the various art forms incorporated (dance, theatre, poetry, fashion art, mask art, and documentary film making), and practical templates and forms including necessary registration and release forms, weekly and daily schedules, and evaluation forms.

What is the most interesting or important thing you took from your Internship this summer?

Through my internship with Moving Creations, I have enhanced my practical skill set as a well as my broader, conceptual understanding of the non-profit theatre industry and the transformative effects of using a variety of arts processes with at-risk youth. Through the process of creating the Project Manual, I developed my ability to synthesize information and material from a variety of sources including published literature, previously written documentation and research, video archives, in-depth conversations with the founder of the organization about the history of the program and her goals for its future, and insight I have gathered through my own experiences in the theatre. Emily, the founder of Moving Creations, was always interested in my viewpoint and how it could be integrated with the program, which I think is an important trait of a successful leader and director; I have learned a great deal about positive leadership qualities from her.

How did the BPIP Fund help make your experience possible?

I am extremely grateful that BPIP gave me the opportunity to take part in this wonderful summer experience. Perhaps most importantly, the internship has solidified my commitment to service: in my future journey in the theatre, I hope to continue to use the arts to empower marginalized individuals and communities. The financial support provided by BPIP made it possible for me to fully invest myself in the internship and to really absorb every learning moment. BPIP made it possible for me to strengthen my research, analytical, writing, communication, and editing skills. My internship experience has given me a deeper understanding of effective therapeutic arts processes that can be used in the community setting and has shown me what it takes to develop a service program based on transformational, multi-arts experiences. I had a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in the dense philosophy of an arts-based transformational education and the theories about the therapeutic effects of each art form both for individual participants and the community as a whole.

Why would you recommend the BPIP Fund?

The BPIP fund is a great opportunity for students to pursue their passions and discover that making a career out of your passions is entirely possible. I love that BPIP empowers students to proactively carve out their unique paths while maintaining an awareness of serving others and the greater good.
