Internship Title: Research in Neuroscience
Employer: Bucknell University
Describe your duties:
I spent the summer at Bucknell and helped Dr. Elizabeth Marin conduct research experiments attempting to elucidate fundamental questions about brain development in fruit flies. I was in charge of raising and breeding different strains of flies and then dissecting them to remove their brains and using molecular tools to analyze differences in their genomes.
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I was fully responsible for my own projects. Dr. Marin was always available to help me when I needed it, but I was able to work through the experiments alone which allowed and forced me to fully understand them and gain firsthand experiments. I also had flexible hours and got to know several professors and students at Bucknell much better through this experience.
What did you enjoy least about your internship? What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
Some of our experiments did not turn out as planned which was disappointing but inevitable in science in general. It was also hard to keep track of everything going on at once sometimes. But the great thing is that over the summer it is not nearly as hard to manage as during the school year.
How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship? How did your internship prepare you for a career?
I was very prepared to handle the responsibilities of my research because I worked in lab with Dr. Marin for the year prior to staying at Bucknell for the summer. Doing this research helped me realize how much goes into writing and publishing a scientific paper and gave me the opportunity to begin to work on my own paper.
What recommendations do you have for other students considering doing an internship?
Definitely do it! Internships are great learning experiences and allow you to get firsthand experience in something which is a good way to make sure you really are interested in it.
