My Externship experience:
My externship was at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. During my visit, I was stationed in the Child Psychiatry unit. Instead of shadowing only one person, my host organized meetings with multiple members in the unit for me. I was able to discuss the various fields of psychology, psychiatry and social work, and hear how the employees had decided on their career paths. I also attended Grand Rounds, a weekly seminar by a guest speaker, toured the in-patient units and looked at data they had recently collected on adolescent suicide.
How did this Externship help you make decisions about your future career?
While I enjoyed my externship, the experience taught me that I don't want to go into a research based career. I now know that I would like to work with the patients themselves instead of working behind the scenes on studies.
What was the most beneficial part of your Externship experience?
During my externship, I asked multiple professionals about how they decided what they wanted to do with a psychology degree. Many of them had to attend graduate and medical school programs in order to obtain the position they held within NYSPI. It was very helpful to hear about the process of applying to these programs and how I can start enhancing my resume for applications to these programs as an undergraduate.
